BSC Membership Use of Club Boats & Safety!
|
Butte Sailing Club’s mission is to provide a place to learn about sailing, engage in spirited racing, and enjoy one another's company both on and off the water. To fulfill this mission, the BSC has obtained a fleet of Club boats that are available for use by checked out members anytime and sailing students enrolled in BSC’s summer lessons.
To keep our Club members safe and to ensure our club fleet remains in good condition, BSC members need to go through a formal checkout process and show and understanding of the following sailing methods. Check out the BSC Checkout Process
BSC Board members will check out individual members on the type of boat that they wish to sail. Members checked out in dinghies will need a second check out process for larger boats such as the O’Day 18, Hobie 16 and San Juan 21.
Members wishing to be checked out will demonstrate the following skills:
Getting Checked out is easy - Look for Board members on Wet Wednesdays (May through Fall); Saturday Checkout Days, and by arrangement with a Board member. BSC Board members and our FRC Representatives are all available for checking out our members! See Board Roster here: About Us

Members wishing to be checked out will demonstrate the following skills:
- Rig, unrig the boat and put all gear away properly.
- Demonstrate that you are able to leave the dock safely and return the boat back to the dock safely.
- Sail the boat to windward, on a reach, and downwind (points of sail) and understand being in the “no go zone” ie., in irons.
- Successfully complete several tacks, and jibes.
- Put boat into irons and recover from irons.
- Turn the boat around to retrieve a floating cushion (person overboard drill).
- Throw a line to someone standing on the dock.
- Either do or discuss the technique of righting a capsized boat.
- Understand the Club’s & CA State Park’s buddy system, whereas a second boat must be out on the Forebay or the member must have a guest with them in case of an emergency.
- Sailors must wear a life preserver at all times on club boats AND MUST BE ABLE TO SWIM (check out form has a place for Club member to initial verifying that they can swim).
- Club members should report any missing gear, damaged rigging, etc. so that repairs or replacement of gear can be made for the upkeep of our fleet. Repairs should be reported to Greg Hardt at 530-370-3612 or email: hardtslandscape@gmail.com or Dean Dyrr at 530-394-7555 or email: deandyrr@hotmail.com
- Members are responsible for the cost of any damage or repairs that may happen when they are using Club boats.
